Why should I computerize my business?

Well, some time back people used paper and pencil to calculate. Then came the Abacus, next the big mechanical calculators, and today we use the pocket-sized digital scientific calculator. Why? These machines continuously made our life easier. They worked faster and became more convenient to use. Today we use computers to perform more complex business transactions very conveniently and faster. Lesser manpower, lesser paper, lesser office space, and at the end lesser funds are needed to run businesses.

Can my business be computerized?

Of course. Any business can be computerized provided that it follows correctly defined routines and tasks to complete its transactions.

Can I computerize all tasks in my business?

Any properly defined business routine can be performed using computers. However, your business might have certain areas which cannot be defined.
For example, take an electroplating process. At the beginning you have a litre of electroplating liquid. Each time you electroplate, the quantity of the liquid does not reduce. Instead, the quality of it is reduced, which is immeasurable. As such tasks cannot be properly defined, cannot be computerized as well.

What benefits would I get by setting up an ERP for my business?

When you run separate software to perform different areas of your business (for example, a software to keep Inventory details, another software to do accounts, another one to perform sales and billing, and so on…) you know only what each of those software tells you about your business, through their detached reporting structure. Another weakness in detached software system is that you have to enter the same bit of data to all of them, making work double or triple. For example, when goods are sold you have to enter it in the Billing system (to print the bill for the customer), make the same entry in the Inventory system (to update the stocks), repeat it in the Accounting system to enter double entry records.
When you have an ERP installed, you make just one entry in the Sales and Billing module which will update the stocks and make accounts entries, even without you knowing it. This is only an example. An ERP makes more complex real-life transactions very easy to perform, efficiently, and faster.
